Selling Soon? Avoid These Bathroom Remodeling Mistakes
If you'll be selling your home soon, remodeling the bathroom can be a good way to increase your return on investment. Buyers love to see homes with newly remodeled bathrooms and will often pay a premium for them. However, remodeling a bathroom to suit potential buyers is a bit different than remodeling one solely to suit your own needs. There are a few key mistakes to avoid when undergoing bathroom remodeling.
Mistake #1: Not building in enough storage.
If you have plenty of furniture to use for bathroom storage, or if you prefer to store most items in the hall closet, then your instinct may be not to include too much shelving and cabinetry in the bathroom. But a potential buyer may look in the bathroom, see a lack of storage, and decide to not consider the home any further. There's really no such thing as too much storage in the minds of most homebuyers. So, include some built-in shelves and super-size your vanity to get the most out of the sale.
Mistake #2: Choosing a bright or trendy color scheme.
Maybe blue and green bathrooms have been really popular lately, or perhaps you're seeing tons of bathrooms in yellow or pink. The problem with these colorful bathroom trends is that they are polarizing. They may go completely off-trend in a few months, or some homebuyers might just not like them. You are far better off sticking with a neutral color scheme. If you want to add pops of color, do so with your bath mats and towels. A simple gray or white bathroom is far less likely to turn off a buyer than one decorated with lime green or hot pink!
Mistake #3: Using too much wood.
Now, you can use wood in bathroom remodel as long as you use the right wood and ensure it has been finished properly. The thing is, not all homebuyers know this. "Don't use wood in a bathroom!" is a common piece of advice that was tossed around for years before waterproof wood finishes became common. So, as sad as it may be, too much wood in the bathroom might turn off buyers who assume it will become rotten and smelly.
If you can avoid these mistakes above when remodeling your bathroom, you should have an easier time selling your home. And you just might earn more money for that home when you do sell, too.
